iF1, a reno air racing class for planes that weigh no less than 500 pounds and powered by small O-200 4-cylinder engines provides incredible racing and for the size of tiny plane it is, they can reach 250mph laps of the course. During the start, they are lined up in rows of three and given a drag race start. When race #1-Hot Stuff has an engine problem, he signals by raising the canopy. However, the planes haven’t all seen the communication flags to abort the start.

The pilot is extremely lucky to be no taller than he is. The other plane is #11 Endeavour, one of the fastest in the class to ever lap the course.

Is it just me or are standing starts with multiple rows of planes extremely dumb?

That’s terrifying. Also got me into a short youtube binge of IF1. Those people are nuts. They’re so close to the ground, the planes are so little. I guess there are plenty of analogies to other motorsports but the flying adds a whole other level.

They like to make it exciting. They certainly succeeded at that; with consequences of course.

Watching it again, I see they are tail draggers; two main gear and a tail wheel. You can’t see straight in front of you with that configuration until you are up to speed and the tail lifts. Airplanes with tricycle gear start off level and the pilot can see pretty clearly. Of course there is a negative consequence of the additional drag from a big fat nose gear instead of a tiny tail wheel.

In any case to your point it seems pretty far past dumb.
